Forget about the passport

SITA revealed the new data from Passenger IT Trends Survey 2017 on passenger satisfaction and implementation of IT trends for airports and travel. The research has shown that more than 57% of customers would already welcome the innovations mentioned in the questionnaire.

So, what was that about? One of the topics discussed was, for example, Gemalto’s cyber security solution using biometric data of passengers. A passenger would be able to use a terminal where his identity would be tested using their fingerprints or retinal scan. Then, the passenger would receive a secure ID token they could use for their flight instead of their passport. This token would ensure that the passenger can board using self-operated gate or board the baggage without waiting. All this is done only by showing this token ID to the appropriate device. Other solutions mentioned in the questionnaire included, for example, real-time luggage tracking or flight notification pushed into the passenger’s phone.

For customers, these innovations would mean fewer waiting times, and airlines would reduce their costly delays. By implementing these IoT solutions, the expectations mentioned could become a reality in the near future. Research has shown that 91% of airlines intend to implement IoT for greater efficiency and customer satisfaction in the next 3 years.
