Industrial CAN LTE router Teltonika RUT204
The Teltonika RUT204 is a specialised compact industrial router with LTE Cat 4 connectivity and an integrated CAN FD hardware interface. It is designed for the efficient and secure transmission of machine data from CAN buses directly to the cloud or local servers without the need for external converters. This enables direct connection of machines to the internet via the mobile network.

Real-world use cases
Thanks to its native support for industrial protocols and mobile connectivity, the router finds applications in telematics, automotive, and advanced industrial automation:
- Fleet and heavy machinery management: With its integrated GNSS receiver for location tracking and support for the J1939 and CANopen protocols, the router enables real-time readout of telemetry data from vehicles, agricultural or construction machinery, as well as monitoring of their status and location.
- Industrial automation and M2M: The router acts as an intelligent communication gateway for collecting data from sensors and control systems operating on the CAN bus. It can log the data and securely transmit it through encrypted VPN tunnels to a monitoring center.
- Smart Grids: The router effectively serves as a local communication gateway for collecting data from electricity meters and substations. It can pre-process the collected data directly on-site and then securely send it to the headquarters via encrypted VPN tunnels.
Hardware equipment and versatile interfaces
The RUT204 router stands out with its rich connectivity integrated into an ultra-compact chassis. In addition to the native CAN FD interface, it features an RS232 serial port, Ethernet with PoE-in support (power over data cable), and integrated Wi-Fi 4 for local wireless management or the connection of peripheral devices. The wide power supply range of 9–57 VDC simplifies integration into the on-board networks of various types of vehicles. The device is also equipped with two SIM card slots (Dual SIM), which guarantees instant backup connectivity (failover) in the event of a primary operator outage or signal loss.

RutOS operating system
Security and stability are ensured by the proven Linux-based RutOS operating system, which offers advanced networking features, a built-in firewall, and broad support for VPN protocols (OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard).
Remote Management RMS
Another advantage is the option to use RMS features. The Remote Management System enables remote management and monitoring of all Teltonika network devices. This system allows users to change device configurations and gather information about their status, even in cases where the devices do not have public IP addresses.
